Ally is a performance-as-exhibition that reimagines the traditional retrospective, conceived by MacArthur Fellow Janine Antoni in collaboration with pioneering choreographer Anna Halprin and contemporary dance artist Stephen Petronio during a two-year residency at The Fabric Workshop and Museum (FWM).

Ally combines installed environments, sculptures, and repeated movement performances on four floors of FWM:

Rope Dance
An improvised performance work instigated by Halprin, who presented a rope to Antoni and Petronio to be used as a tool to connect their bodies and draw lines through space. In the gallery, audience members are invited to connect their bodies with the rope as well. A monthly performance will be held in the gallery, and a wall-sized projection will be on view when the performance is not taking place.

Swallow
An installation of audio and fabric that documents the act of 10 witnesses who each swallowed half of a 10-foot strip of cloth woven by FWM. Visitors can listen to the testimonies of the participants and view a piece of cloth with the only photograph of the swallowing ritual printed upon it.

The Courtesan and the Crone
A monthly performance featuring Petronio performing a dance of seduction while wearing a robe, Venetian mask, and women's shoes, originally choreographed by Halprin as a solo for herself in 1999.

Paper Dance
A weekly improvised performance in which Antoni, in an arena of wooden crates containing her own artworks, uses rolls of brown paper to explore her artistic history. Over the course of the exhibition, paper remnants of Antoni's performances will accumulate in the gallery, while a film of Halprin's seminal 1965 work Parades and Changes is screened amongst the disarray.
