California College of the Arts, San Francisco, CA
The first of its kind on the West Coast, the Program in Curatorial Practice offers an expanded perspective on curating contemporary art and culture. The program seeks to extend the current academic focus on traditional museum and gallery exhibitions, exploring the impact of artist-led initiatives and other efforts that take place outside conventional venues. Reflecting San Francisco’s geographic location and cultural histories, the M.A. in Curatorial Practice degree also emphasizes curatorial and art practices in Asia and Latin America.
De Appel Curatorial Training Programme
Initiated in 1994 by former director Saskia Bos, currently Dean of The School of Art at Cooper Union in New York, the program has been reshaped under the guidance of new director Ann Demeester (2006/2007) and the new tutorial team. Demeester’s changes to the program include a thematic focus on the polarity between ‘free-lance ’ and ‘institutional’ curating and an examination of the notion ‘context-responsive’ curating.

The Curating research program is for appropriately qualified curators who want to develop and explore the wider implications of their work. We are especially interested in research into innovative contemporary curatorial practices, particularly as they reflect upon representations of contemporary visual culture“”above all those in which art practice forms a central element. We anticipate that your research project will have a close affinity to your continuing interests as a curator. We expect specific curatorial projects to become part of your thesis if they can be shown to be integral to your research project. Your curatorial activities will also explicitly inform your research methodology.

Other Curatorial Resources
The Center for Curatorial Leadership in New York City acknowledges the increasing need for curators to learn new skills that are essential in the new museum climate. These skills combine traditional curatorial connoisseurship and art historical scholarship with administrative, managerial, and fundraising expertise. Simply stated, the aim of the program is to create a new kind of curator, one who is able to take responsibility for the art in his or her care, and who is also capable of handling the internal and external managerial responsibilities integral to their institution. The Center is located in New York City, and draws upon the rich resources of museums and academic institutions in New York and elsewhere.
Curating Degree Zero was launched to research, present, and discuss changes in the practice of freelance curators, artist-curators, new-media curators and curatorial collaborations. Beginning in 1998 with a three-day symposium and an ensuing publication, the project now focuses on an expanding archive about these practices, which is touring as an exhibition, accompanied by a program of live events and discussions.
