Group Motion, Philadelphia's oldest contemporary dance company, commissioned choreographer Susan Rethorst, a 2014 Pew Fellow, to create a new work for its dancers. Rethorst's style, which draws on the potential of each individual dancer's body and their movements to create the work, was a departure from Group Motion's typical working process of beginning with a theme to which dancers are asked to adapt their movement explorations. Artistic Director Manfred Fischbeck worked closely with Rethorst and Group Motion's six dancers to examine how this new technique challenged the company. Video footage shot during a four-week rehearsal was integrated into the final performances—the first time that Rethorst has employed multimedia in her performance work. This new work was produced by Philadelphia Dance Projects (PDP) at Philadelphia's Arts Bank in January 2014. An accomplished writer, Rethorst was commissioned to author an essay about the process of her work with Group Motion for a catalogue published for the PDP season.
