Dolce Suono Chamber Music Concert Series

Mahler 100/Schoenberg 60
2010 Grantee
$65,900
Dolce Suono Chamber Music Concert Series was awarded $65,900 for Mahler 100/Schoenberg 60, a two-season commissioning project marking the centennial of Gustav Mahler’s death and the 60th anniversary of the death of Arnold Schoenberg with premiere performances of six new works. In year one, David Ludwig, Steven Mackey, Fang Man, Stratis Minakakis, and Steven Stucky will write chamber works for bass-baritone Eric Owens and the Dolce Suono Ensemble reflecting on the music of Mahler. The program will include Mahler’s first song cycle, Lieder Eines Fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer). In year two, Dolce Suono will be joined by soprano Lucy Shelton in the premiere of a new work by Shulamit Ran, to be composed in response to Schoenberg and played on a program that includes his seminal Pierrot Lunaire. The project will include composer discussions, open rehearsals, educational programs, and master classes.
