Muhal Meets the Wonderful Sound
2011 Grantee
$55,000
Warriors of the Wonderful Sound, a 16-member jazz orchestra directed by saxophonist Bobby Zankel, will commission and premiere an evening-length composition entitled “SoundPath” from 2010 NEA Jazz Master Muhal Richard Abrams, co-founder of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). The premiere of the work will be conducted by Mr. Abrams and presented in partnership with Montgomery County Community College. WWS will also partner with the Kimmel Center and the Philadelphia Clef Club to present a series of open rehearsals, workshops, and master classes to introduce local musicians to Mr. Abrams. The project will include a public symposium hosted by WRTI’s J. Michael Harrison.
