In one section of the gallery, the Vault, five unframed drawings are composed of nine densely drawn layers of black ink. Bowlby, a 2005 Pew Fellow in the Arts, has completed over 20 drawings in this series, loosely titled  A certain density.

Another chance to see “Chicken”

Posted by Mia Breitkopf | September 28, 2010

Did you miss Chicken at the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival?  You’ve got another chance to see the show Charlotte Ford developed and produced with the help of a 2009 Philadelphia Theatre Initiative grant.  Geoff Sobelle (2006 Pew Fellow in the Arts) directs two performances, Friday and Saturday at Bryn Mawr College’s Hepburn Theater. Read on for more info.

A nuclear-powered submarine carries three government workers in charge of a classified mission. Perhaps it’s the recycled air that has pushed them to pursue each other’s destruction. Devising absurd plots of revenge has become their greatest amusement. Chicken is an expressionistic clown play that magnifies our most intimate fears.

Mutter Museum & Quay Brothers in the news

Posted by Mia Breitkopf | September 24, 2010

The College of Physicians Mütter Museum received a PEI grant in 2010 to commission Anatomica Aesthetica (working title), a new film by twin brothers and filmmakers Stephen and Timothy Quay, born in Norristown and graduates of The University of the Arts. The Museum granted the Quay Brothers access to their collections and library, asking them to create a film about anything they liked. WHYY recently reported on this project, and Philadelphia Weekly's Fall Arts Guide features an interview with the Quays in which Stephen Quay says, about the objects in the Museum, "They’re deadly but they’re also beautiful. That's what's frightening."

PTI Grantee Performance: “Macbeth”

Posted by Mia Breitkopf | September 22, 2010

After 31 seasons, The Wilma Theater presents its first-ever production of Shakespeare with an ambitious staging of Macbeth, the playwright’s final tragedy. Macbeth’s ambition to be King of Scotland leads him into a world of evil, deceit, and murder as he and Lady Macbeth succumb to savage drives. Featuring spectacular choreography and original music, this tale of power and madness will be unlike anything audiences have seen on The Wilma’s stage.
