The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage

Opportunities: Philadelphia and Finland

Posted by Asimina Chremos | April 26, 2011

If you haven't seen it on every other art blog in the world by now, here it is: The Tyler School of Art Summer Painting Intensive / Summer Sculpture Intensive (SPI/SSI) is a 7-week (June 13–July 29) immersion program for artists interested in developing their work in a challenging and supportive environment. The deadline for application is, like, now: April 29. Why not read about it on Art Fag Cityone of our favorite e-reads >

Also, here's a cool thing, Soensuu Soundscape Composition Contest 2011 invites composers and sound artists from all over the world to submit soundscape compositions up to maximum of 15 minutes to be performed in the city centre of Joensuu, Finland from 11th July to 13th July 2011. Deadline for submission is June 3. We learned about this through from Modisti, an online social network on experimental music and sound art >

Opportunities: Electronic Music Foundation

Composer and architect Iannis Xenakis is listed as a subscriber to EMF, the Electronic Music Foundation. It happens that he died in 2001, but biological status notwithstanding Xenakis is exactly the type of artist served by the EMF: Contemporary, international, experimental, technical and dealing with music, sound and composition—although EMF also announces opportunities for visual and performing arts and art/science interface projects as well through the bimonthly email, EMF/SEAMUS Professional Opportunities Compilation. We were psyched to learn about EMF and it's sister organization, SEAMUS (Society for Electro Acoustic Music in the United States), by following links in an  email from the World Listening Project yahoogroup—seems quite a few folks like to repost the wonderful contents of the EMF/SEAMUS POC—and we're going to do the same.  Just click over to read the rest of this post.

Thanks to our friends at 4Culture in Seattle, we got word of some fascinating opportunities. Among the most interesting is a call-for-entries from the Water Tower Art Fest in Sofia, Bulgaria, taking place June 24–30. During the festival, organizers populate abandoned or underused buildings with art and artists and open them to the public. The deadline is April 15. Learn more >

There are also two opportunities in the US for artists to incorporate their work in public space:
