Michelangelo Pistoletto: From One to Many,
2010 Exhibition Grant
This multifaceted exhibition is devoted to the art of Michelangelo Pistoletto, one of the most influential living European artists and founder of Italy's 1960s Arte Povera movement. It is the first focused survey of his art in the U.S. in over two decades, featuring over 100 works, many of which have never been exhibited in this country.
The works range from early painted self-portraits through subsequent series of works in the 1960s and early ’70s, including “Quadri specchianti” (Mirroring Paintings), “Oggetti in meno” (Minus Objects), and “Stracci” (Rags). Writing about the mirror paintings in the show’s catalogue, PMA director Timothy Rub notes that they “function as an extended meditation on the nature of representation and on the duality of human experience.” Appropriately, the show’s beautiful catalogue is wrapped in a mirrored foil cover.
Michelangelo Pistoletto: From One to Many, 1956–1974 examines the artist's influence and places it in the context of Italy and Western Europe in the post-World War II period. It also explores the connections between Pistoletto's work and major American art movements since the 1960s, such as Pop Art, Minimalism, and Conceptual Art.
Michelangelo Pistoletto: Cittadelarte, a separate but complementary exhibition, delves into Pistoletto’s more recent activities. In 1998, he founded a center for the study and promotion of creative activities called Cittadellarte in his hometown of Biella, Italy. The museum has created its own version of Cittadellarte in its Perelman Building, emulating its practices through a series of performances, lectures, and workshops.
