Philadelphia Mural Arts Program developed a process of creating a community archive using individual and community histories, art, media, and stories to explore how immigration can affect a community over time. Based in South Philadelphia neighborhoods, the project was informed by historical research and oral history interviews with area residents. In 2009, Mural Arts received Center support to continue this effort through Journeys South—a project that brought together four artists, historians, and community members to develop a series of public installations inspired by immigrant stories.

Mural Arts Philadelphia (formerly Philadelphia Mural Arts Program) is the largest public art program in the US. Mural Arts engages communities in 50–100 public art projects each year and maintains its growing collection through a restoration initiative. Its core program areas—including art education, community murals, and environmental justice—yield unique, project-based learning opportunities for thousands of youth and adults.
