Orchestra 2001 commissioned and premiered works by three composers. Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Moravec composed a new violin concerto for soloist Maria Bachmann. Guggenheim Fellow Robert Maggio created a work for chamber orchestra as a companion to Samuel Barber's Knoxville: Summer of 1915 for a Barber centennial celebration. Pulitzer Prize winner George Crumb completed one final song for his monumental American Songbook series, which Orchestra 2001 premiered over several seasons, performed by soprano Ann Crumb with excerpts from all six American Songbooks at the Kimmel Center, Swarthmore College's Lang Concert Hall, and West Chester University.

Orchestra 2001 is dedicated to performing and promoting the music of the 20th and 21st centuries. Nominated for a Grammy Award in 2015, the ensemble has performed at leading concert halls across the US and overseas, including prominent festivals in Salzburg, Moscow, Dubai, Havana, Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. Orchestra 2001 has presented over 85 world premieres and over 100 Philadelphia premieres, and has been recognized by ASCAP and the League of American Orchestras with Awards for Adventurous Programming.
