We asked poet, performer, and scholar Tracie Morris what inspires her to create art. “I learned a long time ago that my agenda and my muse’s agenda don’t always mesh,” she says. “My job is to discover what the art is telling me, as opposed to imposing my own agenda.”

Tracie Morris works extensively as a singer, sound artist, writer, bandleader, and actor. Her installations have been presented at The Museum of Modern Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Whitney Biennial, and the New Museum, among others. Morris is the founding professor and coordinator of performance and performance studies at the Pratt Institute, and a former creative writing fellow at the University of Pennsylvania. She served as a Pew Fellowships evaluator in 2016, and a Pew Fellowships panelist in 2013 and 2017.
