This grant supported intensive training for Kun-Yang Lin's company, including movement instruction from visiting dance artist Hsu-Hui Huang, former principal dancer of Cloud Gate Dance Theater, Taiwan. Lin used Huang's residency to delve deeper into his own creative practices and to further his dancers' understanding of the impulses that inform his work. Company members attended Huang's technique classes and then applied the training to the rehearsals of Lin's work, Traces of Brush, which was later performed at the Painted Bride Art Center in March 2010. Huang and Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers shared insights from this process at a public discussion, where they demonstrated concepts such as movement derived from stillness and breathing from your heels. Additionally, visual artist Jeff Sable led workshops based on his own integration of contemplative practices.
