The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) presented the East Coast premiere of Peter Saul: A Retrospective, organized by curator Dan Cameron for the Orange County Museum of Art in Newport Beach, California. A provocative and influential figure, Peter Saul's (b. 1934) work fearlessly engages controversial social issues, rendering them in a style that recalls pop art, cartoons, and surrealism, but is uniquely his own. The most comprehensive exhibition of Saul's work to date, the survey featured over 50 paintings and drawings spanning from 1958 to the present, including large-scale "historical epics," satires of art history, and several of Saul's paintings addressing World War II and the war in Iraq.
